ٍSi arrives in Aswan, originally uploaded by new_dles.

Simon arrived in Aswan last night after a marathon couple of days. He hadn’t slept properly since Thursday night so was pretty tired when I met him at the airport. We caught up over a dinner of flat bread a salad of cucumber, tomato and red onion, and mutton hock. Then headed back to asses the damage done by baggage handlers and put the bikes back together. My trailer had been bent en-route so we found a local mechanic who fixed it for us free of charge, which was nice.

We went for our first spin on the bikes after breakfast this morning, which was a bitter sweet affair. Sweet, as we found that the temperature was not too hot once we were rolling and the bikes were in both in working order. However, we were headed for the High Aswan Dam on Lake Nasser about 25km south of Aswan. But were stopped in our tracks after only 15km at the first police check point that we met. With a curt wag of a finger and shake of the head… “No cycling”…said the guard flashing a toothy grin. After a half hour trying to convince him, and his not so toothy friend, that we should really be allowed to pass- unfortunately language can act as a impermeable barrier to a reasonable argument, we headed back to the hotel.

Hopefully this is not a taste of things to come.

We leave in earnest for Alexandria tomorrow.
